American Beauty is a brilliant, poignant film about the unhappiness and insecurity that underlies the seemingly cheerful face of the American dream. It is quite likely the darkest movie to win a Best Picture Oscar.

Kevin Spacey plays a magazine writer who gets tired of pretending to be happy and rebels, taking a stand against his boring, dead-end job, his neurotic, frigid wife (an Oscar winning performance by Annette Benning), and the numbness that had become a staple of his daily life. Along the way, he develops a crush on his daughter's best friend (played by the lovely Mena Suvari). Meanwhile, his daughter (Thora Birch) finds herself strangely attracted to her new neighbor (Wes Bentley), who sells high grade pot while spending a lot of time videotaping the things he finds interesting or beautiful. The plotlines come together in a powerful and surprisingly violent climax that leaves a lot of things open to interpretation.

In the first clip, Spacey is blown away by Suvari when he watches her and Birch at the high school basketball half-time show. We get to see both Mena and Thora in a nicely choreographed cheerleading routine, and then we watch as Spacey fantasizes about Suvari dancing just for him. Unfortunately, when she opens her blouse, we get a flood of rose petals instead of her breasts. Later, lying in bed, he sees Mena suspended above his bed, covered in more rose petals.

In the second clip, Suvari and Birch are hanging out in Birch's bedroom. Mena is wearing just a tank top and panties and talks dirty about when and how she'd fuck Thora's dad. Thora is not amused.

Next, we have the film's first nude scene. By now intrigued and enamored by Bentley, Thora catches him filming her but, instead of being offended or angry as she had been before, she chooses to reveal herself to him instead, stripping off first her shirt, and then her bra.

Finally, there's the scene where Spacey and Suvari finally come together. As he pulls her pants off and opens her blouse to reveal her lovely bare breasts, it becomes clear that she's not quite as promiscuous as she's previously let on.
